SUMMARY:Talks & Teas - Welcome to Crewkerne\, please invade carefully - with Dr Sheila Seymour
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn 1688 William\, Prince of Orange\, was invited by several well-placed Lords to replace King James II who was proving quite unsatisfactory. William had a good claim to the throne being James’ nephew\, son-in-law\, a Protestant and from the Netherlands where rulers knew their place. He set off with an invasion force (just in case)\, heading for the southeast coast. Ferocious weather drove him on & on until eventually he was able to land in Brixham. Then he set off for London – via Crewkerne\, of course. Terrible weather\, his forces had hated Devon\, nothing went to plan. \nSheila will talk about William’s spectacular leadership\, his opinion of Crewkerne and onward journey to London via Exeter and Salisbury. \nAnd something to ponder in the meantime – Where did Crewkerne accommodate (and feed) over 4\,000 very wet horses\, let alone the miffed oxen and thoroughly exhausted men? \nWednesday 8th January 2025 at 2.00pm \nTicket price £5:00\, which includes Tea/Coffee \nTo book either email crewkernemuseum@hotmail.co.uk or in person at the Museum Reception Desk \nLimited numbers event so please book early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:THE MISTLETOE BOUGH: A CHRISTMAS GHOST STORY
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis Christmas\, Blabbermouth  presents an atmospheric\, candlelit performance of the classic Christmas ghost story\, The Mistletoe Bough\, at Crewkerne Museum. \n\nThough now largely forgotten\, The Mistletoe Bough was once one of Britain’s most popular and familiar Christmas songs\, something like the Victorian equivalent of ‘Last Christmas’ or ‘The Fairytale of New York’. The story at the heart of the song\, tells the chilling tale of a Yuletide wedding at a stately home\, and celebrations which go tragically wrong. Versions of the tale can be found across the globe. There are several historic houses which claim to have been the location of the true events which are said to have inspired the story\, at least one of which can be found here in England’s West Country. \n \nBlabbermouth’s Dan Broadbent is both a storyteller and an award-winning archaeologist. His brand-new version of The Mistletoe Bough has been meticulously researched and explores the tale’s long history\, taking the audience from 1920s New York to Elizabethan England\, via the battlefields of the First World War. \n \nWhy not make a ghost story part of your Christmas tradition and join us for an enchanting evening of story\, music and history (plus mince pies!)
